Staten Island to Montauk - driving or something else?

I live on Staten Island and want to get out to Montauk in August. I’m not sure whether I should drive myself, rent something, or find another way. It’s a long ride and I hate dealing with weekend traffic. Would love to hear if someone has a better approach.
